Look For Green Diary

Look for green? Green is here! The Green Diary records our latest news, green living tips, environmental protection knowledge and even a gallery of our daily operations!

Q1: What is “Look For Green”?

Jockey Club “Look For Green” Mobile Recycling Programme (“Look For Green”) is a 2-year environmental project operated by Christian Family Service Centre (CFSC) Environmental Protection and Green Living (EPGL) and funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. Through Green Advertising Truck services and Second-hand Charity Sales events, “Look For Green” serves the East Kowloon community (Tseung Kwan O, Sai Kung, Wong Tai Sin and Kowloon City regions) and brings “Reduce”, “Reuse”, “Recycle” – “3R” elements into real estates and communities by its 3 core services: “Categorized Recycling”, “Community Sharing of Reusables” and “Green Education”

Q2: How is “Look For Green” different from other green projects?

“Look For Green” is a non-governmental social-environmental innovation project funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, serving the East Kowloon community including Tseung Kwan O, Sai Kung, Wong Tai Sin and Kowloon City. It is much different from the main stream government-initiated projects and other green services.

In comparison with the 3-coloured waste separation bin, we collect many more types of recyclables including those with lower commercial values, for example: electrical appliances, various kinds of plastics, glass, fluorescent lamps and tubes, rechargeable batteries and etc. Recycling is helper-guided, enabling comparatively thoroughly categorized and clean recycling, making it more convenient for service users and ensuring that recyclables are at good states for handling by down-stream recyclers.

In contrast with the governmental community recycling network built by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD), the “Look For Green” Advertising Truck leverages on its mobility to serve residents at convenient locations, and is able to enter various communities quickly and flexibly. We do not provide any economic incentive on recycling, emphasizing on the value of environmental protection itself as the reward and responsibility of civil citizens. Besides recycling, “Look For Green” emphasize more on education for awareness and actions. By interesting and experiential learning, we strive to promote living of green lifestyle and cultivate the habit of communal reuse.

Q3: What does “Look For Green” collect?

The “Look For Green” Advertising Truck mainly collects 9 types of recyclables: Paper, Plastics (Styrofoam included), Metals, Regulated Electrical Equipment (REE), Small Electrical Appliances, Rechargeable Batteries, Fluorescent Lamps and Tubes, Glass and Beverage Cartons.

Meanwhile, reusables are also collected for community sharing. They include Electrical Appliances, Clothes (80% new), Books, Cooler Bags, Recycle Bags, Baby Products, other brand-new items and special collection items. (For details please refer to What does “Look For Green” look for?)

Q4: Why would NGOs like CFSC involve in environmental protection work?

“Environmental Protection & Green Living” is one of the core services of Christian Family Service Centre (CFSC). As a non-governmental organization (NGO) that services the community, the values behind environmental protection – love, cherishment and preservation – are exactly what we value and advocate while cultivating good citizenship, promoting green community and increase the livability of our city. With CFSC’s network and experience in community servicing, we wish to contribute and add value to environmental protection in Hong Kong.

With the believe that environmental protection requires mutual contribution from every community stakeholder. Therefore, we actively reach out and seek collaboration with different sectors, launching and extending various green services. We advocate for less wastage and pollution, promote incorporation of environmental protection in daily life, and strive for building a green, livable and sustainable city.
